What to Look for in a Wedding Photographer

And how to know when you’ve found the right one

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard couples say:

“We had no idea how to choose a photographer. It’s such a big decision!”

And it really is. Your photographer is there for some of your most personal, emotional, and joyful moments – often just a step behind you all day. So beyond beautiful photos (which of course you want!), it’s about trust, connection, and finding someone who can hold space for you on such a meaningful day.

Here’s what I’d tell any couple – friend or stranger – to look for in a wedding photographer.

1. Someone whose work feels like you

Photography is so personal. When you’re looking through someone’s portfolio or Instagram, pay attention to how the images make you feel. Do you see yourselves in that style? Is there warmth, honesty, emotion?

For me, I’m drawn to natural, relaxed storytelling – the little in-between moments, genuine smiles, and all the unposed magic that happens when people feel comfortable. I do a few gently posed photos where it counts, but I mostly want you to forget the camera’s there.

Whatever your vibe is, your photographer’s style should align with it – not force you into something that doesn’t feel like you.

2. Experience (not just with a camera)

Weddings are a whirlwind – the light changes constantly, timelines shift, emotions run high. It helps to have someone who knows how to quietly navigate all that without blinking.

It’s not just about taking nice photos. It’s about anticipating moments, adapting quickly, managing group shots without stress, and gently guiding you when needed. If your photographer has shot dozens of weddings in different settings and conditions, they’ll be calm and confident no matter what the day throws at you.

3. A calming, kind presence

You’ll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than with most other people (yes, even your partner at times!). So you want someone you actually like being around.

I always tell couples: you should feel at ease with whoever’s behind the camera. Whether you're camera-shy or just want to enjoy your day without being constantly posed, the right photographer will put you at ease without fuss.

My aim is always to blend in – to be more of a guest than a supplier. I want to feel like a calm, supportive presence you can trust – not someone barking instructions or dragging you away from your guests every five minutes.

4. Good communication (and no surprises)

Booking a photographer shouldn’t feel confusing or overwhelming. You should know exactly what you’re getting, what’s included, when to expect your photos, and how they’ll support you throughout the process.

I always make sure my couples know what to expect from the start – and I’m always here for questions, tips, timeline planning, or anything else you need. This is a big moment in your life, and it deserves someone who treats it with care.

5. Great reviews from real couples

It’s always worth reading through a few testimonials to get a sense of what past couples loved about working with someone. Not just “the photos were amazing” (though that’s lovely!) – but things like:

  • “She made us feel totally relaxed.”

  • “He captured moments we didn’t even realise were happening.”

  • “We didn’t notice her half the time – and somehow she was everywhere!”

That kind of feedback tells you a lot about the experience you’ll have – not just the final product.

6. Someone who gets your priorities

Your day might be all about the people, the party, the quiet moments between you both – or maybe all of the above. Make sure your photographer understands what you care about most.

When I speak to couples, I ask what’s most important to them – not just in photos, but in how the day feels. That way, I can capture what really matters, rather than sticking to a checklist.

Final thoughts

There are so many brilliant photographers out there, each with their own style, approach, and energy. But you’ll know when you find the right one – when the work speaks to you, and the person behind the camera feels like someone you’d want by your side on a pretty special day.

And if you think that might be me – I’d love to hear about your plans.
